Basement Plans

A couple weeks ago we started the process of finishing our basement. I have some before pics so you can get an idea of what we are working with, but let me warn you – they’re not pretty! Before and after demo of the stair side of the room. There was originally a laundry room in the area where you can see the missing floor vinyl. Since we now have a ground floor laundry room, we have no need for...

Claire’s Room Design

I would say that Claire’s room is one of the most “done” of any in our house. Her room is always full of light and just feels cheerful – perfect for my little sunshine baby. This room is a mix of old and new and new to us. The crib, lamp, changing pad, and most of the books and toys were all Ellie’s. The dresser is used and was an awesome $30.00 Goodwill score from my cousin. We had it...

Laundry Room Upgrade

Our house is old and kind of quirky. We knew when we bought it that we needed to figure out how to make better use of the space that was formerly an attached garage and converted into living space (by previous owners). We made a few changes before moving in, but we wanted to live with the space for a while before doing too much. You can see the area I’m talking about on the far right of our house. The...

House Update – Dining Room and Living Room

I’ve been waiting to take pictures of my house until everything is “done.” Well, that could be a while. I do have a three year old and a newborn to deal with, so certain house projects have had to be put on hold for a bit. There are other areas where I’m waiting to find the perfect rug, vase, art, pillows, etc., etc… you get the idea. Sometimes it bothers me to look around and see so many things I...

Status Update

It’s mind boggling to me that we’ve been in our new house in Michigan for over a month now, and that we are having another baby any day. My days have been filled with a million tasks related to renovating an old house while living here, and getting things ready for the baby. Every room is in various stages of mess, and it’s sort of a happy chaos around here right now. Ted started working almost immediately after we moved...

House Update and Living Room Plans

Most of my days the past couple months or so have been filled with making lots of house decisions. Research on paint, light fixtures, faucets, toilets… you name it. It’s definitely more challenging to plan a house remodel from several states away, but we’re so lucky to have my dad helping us out with everything. I always look forward to getting new progress pictures from him each week, and we are only a few short weeks away from moving in...

Dining Room Plans

Continuing the eating area plans, next up is the formal dining room.  I recently purchased a set of 6 vintage walnut, caned back chairs with upholstered seats from a store in Washington DC. We’ve had them crammed around our too small table for a while now and I’m looking forward to using them in a larger, more appropriate space soon. The seats need to be reupholstered, so I’d like to find a Sunbrella indoor/outdoor fabric that can withstand spills and...

Breakfast Nook Plans

Next on my plan of attack is the breakfast nook. The room is about 7’x9′, and one wall will be taken up by a large built in china cabinet. The other end is a nice bay window, and there are open doorways on either side. At first, I wanted to see if we could salvage the existing upper cabinets because they were original to the house. The case was covered in several layers of old (probably lead!) paint, and the doors...

Master Bedroom Plans

I’m still adjusting this one, but I think I’ve got a good start. We will be keeping our current dresser (not the one pictured – ours is vintage), and that’s about it. Our current nightstands will move to the guest bedroom, and I’m trying to talk my way into getting a new king sized bed. Tall people problems! If we do, we will use our current queen size in the guest bedroom as well. Due to the layout, the bed...
