One more day at Lake Charlevoix

I don’t have too much more to say about these, other than Ellie was obsessed with all the sand toys. Our condo had a few small things, but Ellie didn’t mind walking up and down the beach, helping herself to whatever she could find. Most of the kids were out playing in the water, so I would usually try to nod a thank you to the parent and just let her have at it for a while. I look forward...

Northern MI, Continued

To pick up where I left off with our Michigan travels, we visited Traverse City, Charlevoix and Leland’s Fishtown. We visited Black Star Farms for the first time on this trip, and I can definitely say we will go back again. They have a vineyard and tasting room, and it’s basically a free petting zoo, which is right up Ellie’s alley. The day we went was a bit overcast, but it was still a gorgeous place. They had a pretty...

Lake Charlevoix – Boyne City, MI

We spent most of our last week in Michigan in Boyne City. For all my non-Michigan friends, that’s a city in what we call “up north” – a phrase we use to describe anything farther north than Grand Rapids on the west side, and Detroit on the east. We have thousands of lakes, including the “big lake,” Lake Michigan to spend our summer days enjoying. But really, a lot of the smaller inland lakes aren’t all that small either. We...

Hackley and Hume Houses – Muskegon, MI

We recently spent the day at a couple of interesting old houses in Muskegon, MI with my cousins Robin and Kristin. The houses were beautiful and formerly owned by wood manufacturers with an interest in fine woodcarvings and other cool details. I will let the pics (mostly Robin’s – thanks!) speak for themselves. Why wasn’t I able to take more pictures here? Well…. Don’t let that smile fool you, she was a holy terror. At one point on the tour,...

Happy 2nd Birthday Ellie!

Today is Ellie’s official birthday. We didn’t do anything too crazy for her this year, but we did have a little party at our cottage while we were in Michigan. I baked and decorated her a puppy cake (from scratch!). The cake tasted great, but cake decorating is not really a skill for me. Thankfully frosting hides a lot of issues. I love that first pic. Ellie was saying “I bite it.” Haha, not yet baby. To back up a...

Frederik Meijer Gardens

Ellie loves nothing more than to run around outside, so the gardens are a great place to let her burn off some energy. I had thoughts of getting some great shots of her with the flowers as the perfect backdrop, but I forgot she is a toddler. A BUSY toddler. The odds of getting her to sit still for 30 seconds are like the odds of winning the lottery. The children’s garden has tons of really great water features, but...

John Ball Zoo

Ellie is a huge animal lover, so we decided to visit the zoo in Grand Rapids. I hadn’t been there in probably 20 years, so I was pleasantly surprised with how nice it is now. They have really added a lot of new stuff, and the existing exhibits seem nicer. The only thing I really recognized was the penguin area, which hasn’t changed at all. Ellie loved spending the day with “baby Ainzey” and the animals. Ted will probably be...
