Basements can be such a great extra space in a home. This room started out with some good bones in place – it’s a walkout with a sliding door to the backyard on a lake. It also has an adjacent wet bar room with a window counter to the backyard, making it great for entertaining. The biggest issue was how to place furniture in the narrow, L-shaped room.

First, I drew up two possible floor plans for the main living area. It’s helpful to know how many people you need seating for, and what other ways you will use a room. Here we included a table that can be used for casual meals or games.

After deciding on a preferred layout, I created a design board and sent it to my client for review. She requested lots of blue with red and this specific rug. After a little tweaking, we ended up here.

There was some existing cabinetry in the bar room, but the layout really didn’t make the best use of the space. Here are some before pics.

And here is the design board with a little photoshop magic.

This basement will be such a great hangout space!
